50th Anniversary of the Watts Riots
Gerald Horne talked by video from Raleigh, North Carolina,
about the 50th anniversary of the Watts riots in Los Angeles, which
erupted August 11, 1965, following the arrest of a black man for drunk
driving. The six days of looting and arson yielded 34 deaths and over
$40 million in property damage. The program began with a clip of a
December 7, 1965, CBS News documentary. Among other clips shown in the background was a clip of former Assistant Secretary of Labor Daniel Patrick Moynihan talking about the socioeconomic situation of the black people. Other topics included the legacy of Julian Bond, a black activist who died the previous evening at the age of 75.
